Mary Annette Pember talks about her recent article, “Wealthy Hampton Homeowners Are Trying to Suppress Tribal Sovereignty.” The article examines the controversy generated when the Shinnecock Nation built two 60-foot tall electronic billboards on their sovereign land adjacent to the Hamptons, on Long Island, NY, well known for being a summer retreat for New York City’s wealthy and famous. Pember is an enrolled member of the Red Cliff Band of Wisconsin Ojibwe. Chenae Bullock, Shinnecock tribal member and Montauk descendant, activist and cultural preservationist, will join the discussion to talk about the issue from the tribes’s perspective.
